Baden submitted a question asking about kids bike camps. The request was specifically for the Walnut Grove/Langley area, but we will provide a few suggestions for camps in the general lower mainland area.
Check your local community centre to see if they offer any programs. Many centres offer a variety of children’s sports camps, and cycling may be a part of one of those programs.
Bike Roadeos: Schools, community centres, and community policing centres sometimes hold events called “bike roadeos” (these are usually in conjunction with larger community events). A course is set up, using pylons and other markers. Kids are invited to ride through the course, encountering stop signs, crosswalks, and traffic lights. The goal is to teach children hand signals, traffic signs, and general safety aspects of cycling. Volunteers (and often local police members) are on hand to assist.
VanCycle Mobile Bicycle Shop is not specifically endorsing any of the following programs; we are providing links so you can read more about various programs.
Pedalheads: “Pedalheads™ is an 8 level instructional bike safety and skills program for kids aged 3-14. From training wheels to trails, each level includes 5 learning categories: safety knowledge, safety skills, trail riding, street riding, and bike maintenance.”
Note: There happens to be a Pedalheads location in Walnut Grove: Alex Hope Elementary, 21150 – 85th Avenue
ESC Escape Adventures: Example of their Little Ripper camp: “Two-wheels, brakes, gears and mini-ramps! The Little Rippers program has three levels which focus on a variety of skills. Each level will take your Little Ripper on an adventure through the world of mountain biking while teaching them the important skills needed to ride the trails on the North Shore. Our main objective during the week is to teach safe riding behaviour while riding on our North Shore trails, practicing their skills on our mini-ramps and in our local bike park.” August 17-21, August 24-28 and August 31-September 4
If you know of any kids bike camps, let us know! We would especially like to hear about camps that you or your kids have attended.
